Dominica: ERC criticizes exclusion of campaign financing rules in draft legislation

The Electoral Reform Coalition claims that several recommendations have been omitted from draft legislation as the government moves ahead with its efforts to bring to Parliament before yearend, proposed electoral modernisation legislation as part of the electoral reform process in Dominica.

In June last year, the former president of the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice, Sir Dennis Byron, submitted a report on electoral reform to the Dominica government.

The opposition parties boycotted the last general election, which led to the ruling Dominica Labour Party securing 19 of the 21 seats, with the remainder going to independent candidates.

The ERC said among the recommendations made by Sir Dennis Byron, which have been inexplicably deleted, include provisions related to campaign financing.
