The Electoral Commission of Jamaica says it is preparing to embark on field work for the mapping of the new constituency boundaries for St Catherine as part of the process to establish Portmore as a parish.

A new electoral map will thereafter be generated.

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown disclosed on Wednesday morning that the ECJ has written to the Ministry of Local Government and is awaiting the gazetting of the new boundary description for St Catherine, to proceed.

Members of the ECJ appeared before the Constituency Boundaries Committee of Parliament on Wednesday to outline the process for the establishment of the new boundaries and any implications.

The ECJ is to return to the Committee on May 31 with a more comprehensive response.

Mr Brown said a Parish Boundary Forum has been established, as an interface between the ECJ and the Standing Committee of Parliament.

The Forum will be supported by a Parish Boundary Advisory Committee.

He said the major political parties will be asked to submit written proposals for the naming and numbering of the three designated Portmore constituencies.
