More of Jamaica's rural schools are being connected to the internet, as a result of a partnership between the government and satellite Internet provider Starlink.
Starlink is owned by the controversial US billionaire Elon Musk.
Education Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon, addressing the matter on Tuesday, said rural schools have faced connectivity issues, preventing access to high speed Internet services, "and so what we've done is to partner with Starlink, so we can use satellite technology to deliver the internet to schools in rural areas."
The Education Minister, who was speaking at the Jamaica Teachers' Association's Education Conference in Trelawny, sought to assure educators that broadband issues in rural Jamaica are being addressed.
She also told the conference that her Ministry is moving to improve the bandwidth of broadband Internet in schools, conceding that Internet connectivity is still a concern for some schools.
The JTA conference is being held under the theme "Innovations in Education Technology: The Imperative for Change."
