Election announcement imminent

Jamaicans are now on high alert for announcement of the date for the general election, with Prime Minister Andrew Holness giving the clearest signal yet that he's close to making an announcement.

That indication came on Sunday during a meeting of the governing Jamaica Labour Party's Central Executive at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St James.

JLP General Secretary Dr. Horace Chang said Mr. Holness was told that the party is ready for an election with all 63 candidates in place.

The Prime Minister reportedly indicated that he was ready to announce the date, as a result of which Dr Chang and other officers of the party teasingly told reporters afterwards that it would be “soon, soon”.

Dr Chang reiterated that no election will be held while states of emergency are still active.

The House of  Representatives is to meet on Tuesday but there is no indication yet of  the agenda and whether it includes rescinding the anti-crime measures.
