An emergency meeting to discuss the non-payment of retroactive salaries to lecturers at the Sam Sharpe Teachers' College in St. James was held Monday afternoon. More than 40 lecturers were upset after they received a letter last Friday stating that the school’s administration has withheld retroactive monies which they should have received this month. The reason given was that the lecturers were being overpaid for a period. However, at Monday’s meeting the Principal, Osbourne Pinnock told the lecturers that he sought advice from the Ministries of Education and Finance and he was told to go head and pay them the retroactive amounts owed. Mr Pinnock told RJR News that the cheques have already been written and should be ready by Tuesday morning. In the meantime the principal says the matter of the overpayment and claims that the administration failed to follow required guidelines will be addressed shortly.
