Florida braces for Hurricane Milton

Jamaicans in sections of Florida are bracing for the impact of a Category 5 Hurricane Milton as it heads towards the state.

Milton rapidly strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane on Monday in the Gulf of Mexico, on a path toward Florida, threatening a dangerous storm surge in Tampa Bay and leading to evacuation orders and long gas lines.

The storm is expected to hit the heavily populated city of Tampa Bay with full force on Wednesday.

A state of emergency has been declared in 51 of the 67 counties in Florida.

Ian Bryan, a Jamaican living in the City of Fort St. Lucie, Florida on the east coast, speaking Monday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said  there is anxiety among residents and that preparations are in high gear.

Mr Bryan said his biggest fear was of flooding that may be associated with the heavy rains from the hurricane.

The storm lends more urgency to the cleanup from Hurricane Helene, which swamped the same stretch of coastline less than two weeks ago.

Cayman

Meanwhile, Cayman's Premier, Juliana O'Connor-Connolly, has urged Caymanian students in Florida to return to Cayman as soon as possible as Hurricane Milton, bears down on the state.

The Premier, speaking in Parliament on Monday, she encouraged the students to take advantage of an evacuation flight organized by Cayman Airways even as she warned them of the enormity and strength of the hurricane.

She also emphasised that Tampa International Airport had announced that it will close Tuesday morning due to the hurricane.

Premier O'Connor-Connolly has urged Caymanians in the path of the storm to take it seriously.
