Foreign Minister Johnson Smith warns against illegal migrant crossings

Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade Minister Kamina Johnson Smith

Jamaicans are being urged to desist from making illegal migrant crossings which jeopardize their lives and that of fellow citizens.

The call has come from the country's Foreign Minister Senator Kamina Johnson Smith.

Senator Johnson Smith has also urged her fellow Jamaicans to follow the immigration laws of the countries they visit.

The latest report of Jamaicans using other countries as illegal transit points have come from Belize, which last week announced new entry requirements for nationals from Haiti and Jamaica into that CARICOM country.

The John Briceno Administration in Belize said the decision follows an increasing number of visitors who are using his country as a transit point to reach the United States.

Mrs Johnson Smith, in response, noted that the criminal behaviour of some Jamaicans in these countries is negatively affecting the experience of other Jamaicans at legitimate immigration points.

She said the Jamaican Government has been monitoring the situation in the countries through which its nationals are crossing and assessing available data.

Jamaicans have also been using Panama and Mexico as illegal transit points.
