With Jamaica experiencing another surge in crime and violence, Prime Minister Andrew Holness has asserted that he’s not ruling out reintroducing States of Public Emergency in response.
The administration lifted the States of Emergency in August last year after the Supreme Court ruled that the indefinite detention of persons under the security measure was unconstitutional.
Mr Holness, speaking Monday at a press conference to announce the imposition of a Zone of Special Operations in Norwood, St James, argued that SOEs would greatly assist the government to combat the violence now in communities across the island.
He insisted that the government has not abandoned this option, despite the court ruling.
In that regard, Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte said the government was seeking a speedy hearing by the Court of Appeal of its challenge to the Supreme Court's ruling.
