National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang today announced that the government intends to establish additional Zones of Special Operations (ZOSOs) in crime spots across the island.

He was speaking in the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon, while piloting amendments to the Zones of Special Operations Act.

The amendments were approved in the Lower House and seek to strengthen the legislation used to curtail violence in troubled communities.

Zones of Special Operations have been declared in seven communities across the island.

Dr. Chang said the new bill, which was supported by the parliamentary opposition, will result in an expansion of ZOSOs into other communities.

"We have seven zones, three are in the build phase, the other four are still in the hold phase, and I know that the Jamaica Social Investment Fund is looking at the required budget to expand that build phase to other areas," he noted.

He said socio-economic data from the Planning Institute of Jamaica as well as crime statistics from the Jamaica Constabulary Force will be used to help determine the other communities where ZOSOs will be established.
