The government has followed through on its promise to withdraw the controversial resolution to extend the period for which Cabinet documents can be kept secret to 70 years.

The motion to withdraw was moved Friday in the Senate by Leader of Government Business Kamina Johnson Smith.

However, the issue earlier caused contention, when Opposition Senator Lambert Brown queried whether it would be withdrawn.

"Since the resolution was moved last week in this place, at which time I asked the minister is it upward or downward adjustment and I got no answer, I would expect that today, in this Senate, the resolution would be withdrawn," he contended.

At the time, the Senate was debating the resolution to extend the state of emergency in the St. Andrew South police division.

Senator Brown said he was concerned the government had given no indication at the start of the sitting that the motion to withdraw the resolution would be taken.

However, Government Senator Pearnel Charles Jr stated that the matter would be dealt with before the end of the sitting.

The resolution to extend the period for which Cabinet documents can remain exempt from requests under the Access to Information Act from 20 to 70 years drew wide public criticism, forcing the government to reverse its position.
