Hurricane Beryl: NSWMA removing garbage to prevent blockages

The National Solid Waste Management Authority is removing loose garbage from communities ahead of Hurricane Beryl's passage to prevent blockage of drains and waterways.

Executive Director Audley Gordon told Radio Jamaica News that the focus is being placed on areas prone to flooding, such as Seaview Gardens, New Haven and Bull Bay in St. Andrew, and Rocky Point, Clarendon, among others.

"Right across the island now we are into single-digit backlog in all our regions, except MPM, which is Kingston and St. Andrew, and some areas of St. Catherine, which we are battling to get on top of. But the focus now...this morning is to remove the garbage from those schools and those places that are being used as shelters," he said.

"We are focusing on the main road to get rid of the loose garbage, so that when the water comes, we don't have a lot of garbage swimming down to the sea," added Mr. Gordon.

He urged citizens not to put out garbage at this time, noting concerns for the safety of NSWMA workers.

"So when we clean up, we ask the people not to put out the garbage until after the hurricane has passed. Don't put out during the rain because we can't stay out there during the rain to collect it," he said.
