The police have released the identity of the York Castle High School student who was killed in a motor vehicle crash in Brown's Town, St. Ann on Thursday. She is Derecca Campbell, 15, of Duanvale, in the neighbouring parish of Trelawny.
Derecca, who was a grade ten student, celebrated her birthday last Saturday. Two other students and an adult were injured in the two-vehicle collision.
About 5:15, Derecca was among passengers in a mini bus travelling from Brown's Town to Trelawny, when the bus collided with a truck along the Retreat main road.
Injured passengers from the bus were taken to hospital where Derecca died while being treated.
The drivers of both vehicles were warned for prosecution.
Meanwhile, there was a sombre mood at York Castle High on Friday as students and staff reflected on the life of the honour roll student.
Raymond Treasure, Principal of the school, said pastors and guidance counselors from neighbouring schools and the Ministry of Education's Region Three offered words of comfort.
Parents as well as residents of Brown's Town also turned up to offer support.
“So we really spent the time reflecting, doing some praise and worship and after that we deployed the councilors to the classroom where they had one and one time with the students. It seems to have worked because the students are settled and the atmosphere is pretty calm at this point,” said the principal.
