Important meeting this week on Road Traffic Act

 

Prime Minister Andrew Holness and members of the National Road Safety Council are scheduled to meet Thursday to discuss contentious matters relating the new Road Traffic Act.

 

Prime Minister Holness announced on Friday that the newly enacted law could see further amendments. 

 

This followed public outcry over the provision which prohibits public passenger vehicles from transporting children up to a certain age without a child restraint system.

 

Dr Lucien Jones, Vice-Chairman of the Road Safety Council, told Radio Jamaica News that the ministers of National Security, Health, Justice and Transport will be in attendance at Thursday's meeting.

 

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gary McKenzie, head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, has confirmed that the police have been directed to use discretion and allow children to be transported on the back seats of Public Passenger Vehicles without a child restraint system, while the authorities contemplate further action on the matter.
