A report from Kelesha Williams
It was a tear-jerking start to the new school term at Jessie Ripoll Primary School in Kingston on Tuesday morning, as students, parents and staff reflected on the life of the principal, O'Neil Stevens.
Mr. Stevens and his wife, Camesha, died in a motor vehicle crash in the United States on Friday.
As Kelesha Williams reports, dozens of parents, students and teachers gathered at the school on Tuesday to honour the life of the beloved principal.
The general message, as they joined in mourning and in worship, was that Mr. Stevens was an honourable man, an excellent principal who was a giant in education and someone who will be truly missed.
A parent recalled that the principal had a good rapport with students and staff, adding that he knew each student by name.
The Ministry of Education and more than 50 councillors were locked in sessions to provide support to staff and students.
The ministry said its trauma and grief counselling teams will remain engaged with the school in the coming days and weeks to offer continuous assistance as the school community works through this period of loss and healing.
