Judge urges united effort to achieve best outcomes in Hilary Term

By Racquel Porter

High Court Judge Justice Carolyn Tie Powell is encouraging stakeholders in the legal fraternity to recommit to making the most of the 67 days in the Hilary Term.

There are 1032 cases listed to be heard over the next 15 weeks.

Among those cases, 980 were transferred from the previous Michaelmas Term.

Forty-one are new committals while 11 are set for sentencing.

Admitting that the numbers are daunting, Justice Tie Powell urged stakeholders not to lose sight of all that is going right.

Noting that there are four judges sitting in the trial court and another in a part-heard matter deemed to be lengthy, Justice Tie Powell said the problem of limited human resources is obvious.

But the judge said she had seen an increase in productivity, the use of technology, case management and greater transparency.

She also encouraged the prosecution and defence counsel to shorten proceedings, where applicable, via plea negotiations and agreeing to witness statements.

Murder is the leading offence before the court this term, with 391 such cases, including five new matters.
