JTA wants more support for schools reopening for face-to-face classes

JTA President Winston Smith

The Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) has highlighted a number of concerns which it wants addressed ahead of  Monday's resumption of  face-to-face classes at select schools.

JTA President Winston Smith spoke with Radio Jamaica News on Monday, confirming that schools are in need of  resources in order to meet the established COVID-19 protocols.

At the top of  the list are santisers, masks, gloves and thermometers.

Mr. Smith said the Ministry of Education will also need to provide schools with improved janitorial services.

A total of  376 primary schools have been selected to reopen for face-to-face classes beginning November 8.

This arrangement will apply to 45,390 students and 2,520 teachers.

The schools were selected following an in-depth risk assessment of  the 759 primary schools across the island.

The JTA also wants an isolation room established at each school that will resume physical classes on Monday.

This should be Mr. Smith matched by a medical emergency plan, Mr Smith said.
