Sir Patrick Allen

Jamaicans are being invited to publicly denounce violence against children by observing a national day of mourning on Friday June 23.

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen today (Wednesday) issued the proclamation for a day of mourning for Jamaican children who have been killed or abused.

The declaration is in response to recent incidents of violence against children, including the abduction and murder of eight-year-old Danielle Rowe, a student of Braeton Primary School.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Custodes, Justices of the Peace Association, Jamaica Umbrella Group of Churches, National Parent Teachers Association, Jamaica Teachers' Association, National Child Month Committee and other stakeholders.

Citizens are invited to show their support for the national day of mourning in several ways, including through special devotional services in schools and other public spaces, "the turning on of headlights, the wearing of black, the tolling of church bells at noon and any other appropriate response", according to Sir Patrick.

He urged all Jamaicans to participate in the activities as they are so able.
