Labour Ministry reviewing national minimum wage

Collette Risden Roberts, Permanent Secretary in the Labour Ministry and Dr. Fenton Ferguson, Opposition Spokesman on Labour

The Ministry of Labour has revealed that a review of the national minimum wage is now underway.

Collette Risden Roberts, Permanent Secretary, told RJR News that the exercise started earlier this year.

She said the Minimun Wage Advisory Commission was instructed by the minister to begin their work following an increase in the minimum wage in March last year.

At that time, the national minimum wage was increased from $5,600 to $6,200.

Concern

Meanwhile, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, Opposition Spokesman on Labour, on Tuesday expressed concern that portfolio Minister Shahine Robinson was silent on the minimum wage during her contribution to the Sectoral Debate last week.

"The Minimum Wage Commission would have to carry out consultations across the country for a minimum wage increase, but during the campaign, the country was given the impression that doubling up the minimum wage would have been by decree," he suggested.

He is calling for Mrs Robinson to immediately take steps to increase the figure.
