Mayor of Portmore Leon Thomas has again claimed that residents of the municipality want to be able to decide if it becomes Jamaica's 15th parish and how their mayor is selected.
More than 100 residents on Tuesday evening attended the first consultative meeting about the proposed Counties and Parishes (Amendment) Bill 2022.
The bill, when enacted, will provide the legal framework for Portmore becoming a parish.
The proposed law includes provisions that will do away with direct mayoral elections as well as alter the boundary of Portmore.
Mr. Thomas restated that residents do not wish for any changes to occur within their municipality without their input and approval.
He said other consultative meetings will be held in the coming weeks as more and more residents call for a referendum on the matter.
He added that the views of residents will be discussed at the next meeting of the Municipal Corporation and the discussions coming out of that meeting will be shared with the Ministry of Local Government & Rural Development.
