Jermaine Miller has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his former girlfriend 27-year-old Nevia Sinclair.

Miller, who is 26, is to serve 20 years before he is eligible for parole.

He was also sentenced to 13 years for burglary when he appeared in the St. Elizabeth Circuit Court on Thursday.

Both sentences are to run concurrently.

It was reported that on January 12, 2020, Ms Sinclair was at her parents' house in Brinkley, St. Elizabeth when Miller entered through a bedroom window and stabbed her.

Miss Sinclair had gone to live with her parents after ending her relationship with Miller.

Miller's attorney, Peter Champagnie, told Radio Jamaica Newsthat the judge, in handing down the sentence, took into account the prevalence of domestic violence in Jamaica.

"The judge, I thought, to his credit, explained extensively why this sentence had to be imposed. And I think in all the circumstances, my client did the most honourable and decent thing and that was to have pleaded guilty," he said.
