Man crushed to death in Brompton, St. Elizabeth

A 22-year-old man was crushed to death on Thursday at a quarry in Brompton, St. Elizabeth.

He has been identified as Rohan Gordon, a labourer of Brompton Lane.

It was reported Mr. Gordon, a quarry employee, was pinned between a truck and an excavator.

He was pronounced dead at hospital.

Work has stopped at the site due to a protest by Mr. Gordon's relatives.

His father, Devon Gordon says he has taken the death of his son hard as he is the main caregiver for his children.

“Me is a mother and a father to them...He say (sic) to me yesterday ‘daddy, you’ll see me later on’. When we come from work and hear shock[ing] news, mi a tell yuh,” Mr. Gordon told Radio Jamaica News correspondent Rodney Longmore.

A former worker at the quarry, who claims there have been other accidents at the location, is calling for the Ministry of Labour to investigate.

“A nuh di first time a man dead up yah suh and wi nuh see nutt’n come out a it. Man lose all dem finger and up yah wi nuh see nutt’n come outta it, man…Wi waah justice, man. Wi nuh waah dis yah one cover up,” the protestor said.

The management of the quarry is meeting with Mr. Gordon's father and the police.
