A stabbing incident at the Mannings High School in Westmoreland has left four male students nursing stab wounds, two in serious condition, and a fifth in police custody.
The incident, which reportedly began unfolding shortly after 8:00 Tuesday morning, forced a premature end to the school day on Tuesday.
It is reported that a boy was standing with his sister when she was approached by a group of male students, one of whom had a knife.
The boy with the knife began wielding the weapon as he neared the siblings.
The brother was trying to protect his sister when the knife reportedly fell from the boy.
The reportedly grabbed the weapon and began wielding it wildly, injuring four of the boys in the process.
They were taken to hospital where two of them had to undergo surgery, while the knife wielder was taken into police custody.
Dr. Leighton Perring, Senior Medical Officer at the Savanna-la-Mar General Hospital, whose son is one of the boys injured, says his son will have to be transferred to the Cornwall Regional Hospital to undergo further treatment.
Dr. Perring adds that he was overwhelmed by the level of response from students at the school following a call for blood donors.
The school's principal and staff held an emergency meeting after the incident to decide the way forward.
Officers from the Education Ministry are expected to visit the institution on Wednesday.
The brother was questioned by detectives at the Savanna-La-mar CIB however, it is still not clear whether he will be charged.
