Matthew Samuda files defamation lawsuit against PNP's Ryan Simpson

By Kimone Witter

Jamaica Labour Party candidate for North East St. Ann, Matthew Samuda, has filed a defamation suit against People's National Party caretaker for the constituency, Dr. Ryan Simpson.

The suit was filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday by attorney, Patrick Foster KC from the law firm, Nunes, Schofield, DeLeon and Company.

Mr. Samuda is claiming that Mr. Simpson made defamatory statements on social media platforms, including TikTok and Instagram, on July 21 and 27, which have been repeated on several occasions.

He says as a result of the allegations, he has suffered damages, including to his reputation.

The former Cabinet minister is seeking damages, including aggravated damages, interest, costs and any other relief the court deems fit.

Mr. Samuda's lawyers stated in court documents that Mr. Simpson made the comments to harm the JLP candidate's reputation, particularly in circumstances where both he and Mr. Samuda are opponents in the constituency of North East St. Ann.

Mr. Samuda resigned from the Senate and Cabinet earlier this month to facilitate his nomination as the candidate for the constituency.

A by-election will take place on September 30.

Mr. Simpson is not contesting the election.
