Meeting nutritional needs of students a concern for JTA

JTA President La Sonja Harrison

With the countdown now on to the start of  the 2022/2023 academic year, concern is being raised about the capacity of  government-run schools to meet the nutritional needs of  students amid the rise in food prices.

According to La Sonja Harrison, President of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA), schools have not received an increase in the grant to operate canteens, up to now, with classes scheduled to resume on Monday.

Ms. Harrison, speaking Monday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, warned that this will place an additional burden on school administrators.

The JTA President also disclosed that schools are just receiving allocations from the Ministry of Education with five days to go before classes resume.

She said the distribution of  textbooks got off  to a late start as well.
