Montego Bay: Municipal traffic wardens to be hired

Following complaints from residents and motorists, the St. James Municipal Corporation has announced a raft of measures to ease traffic congestion in Montego Bay.

In an interview with Radio Jamaica News, Mayor of Montego Bay Councillor Richard Vernon said there needs to be an increase in the number of traffic personnel manning major intersections in the city.

As a result, he said the Corporation will be hiring municipal traffic wardens to manage the flow of traffic in and around Montego Bay.

Mayor Vernon acknowledged that Montego Bay needs a proper transportation centre, and with that, the removal of satellite taxi stands across the city, which are contributing to the traffic nightmare.

He said the St. James Municipal Corporation will also be working closely with the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce & Industry to review delivery hours, which are currently during the hours 10AM to 2PM, to ease traffic congestion.

The mayor also noted that new road markings are also needed to ease congestion.

He added that the repair of roads, currently being carried out by the National Works Agency in Montego Bay should also help to ease the congestion.
