More than 20 people detained in Portmore operation

More than twenty persons were detained on Thursday during police/military operations in Portmore, St. Catherine
 
An individual suspected to be involved in lottery scamming was among the persons detained.
 
Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, Operations Officer for the St. Catherine South Police Division, told Radio Jamaica News that the police and soldiers focused on the Waterford, Gregory Park and Westchester communities.
 
During the operations, which lasted for ten hours, the security forces also seized more than 10 pounds of ganja and uncustomed goods, including cigarettes. 
 
Four persons were charged for possession and dealing in ganja. One of them was also charged for possession of uncustomed goods. 
 
Another was charged for breaches of the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transactions) Act, commonly called the Lottery Scam Act. 
 
The persons charged are scheduled to appear in court next month.
 
Superintendent Nicholson said a number of the persons picked up have been interviewed by detectives and released. 
 
He noted that the security forces will continue the operations "with the aim of reducing the opportunities for criminals to carry out their activities".
