Most fishers heed warning to leave Pedro Cays

Rocky Point, Clarendon resident and Pedro Cays business operator Shernette, speaking with Radio Jamaica's Clarendon correspondent, Hopeton Henry

The majority of fishers have heeded calls to evacuate the Pedro Cays as Hurricane Beryl threatens to deliver life-threatening storm surge and flooding.

Shernette, who is among those who left the Pedro Cays on Tuesday morning, said conditions at sea influenced her decision to return to the mainland.

"Well, last night was rough yuh nuh, but from true the storm look like it a come nearer and nearer, it calm, yuh can walk pon di sea right now... Every time storm a come di sea shine," she noted.

But she said some fishers remained on the Pedro Cays.

"Yuh have couple people lef back over deh seh dem nah come. [But] majority come; some gone a St. Elizabeth, some gone a Rocky Point," she said.

Shernette said of the approximately 400 people who make a living on the Pedro Cays, about 12 of them have declined calls to evacuate, opting instead to remain behind to protect their assets.

Meanwhile, commenting on the fact that she lives in a flood-prone area on the mainland, the Rocky Point, Clarendon resident said she will not be completing a second evacuation.

"No sah, mi nah move enuh. Mi lef Pedro Cay already...weh mi never wah lef. Mi nah move go nuh further. If eh water a come, mi guh pon eh house top," she quipped.
