Cherise Bruce Douglas, Manager of Crime Stop Jamaica
Crime Stop Jamaica says most people who provide tips about guns and criminals are not interested in monetary rewards.
It was disclosed that tips to Crime Stop have increased by 97 per cent since the start of the year.
Cherise Bruce Douglas, Manager of Crime Stop Jamaica, says only about seven per cent of people who call express an interest in the incentives.
"You do have persons who initially call interested in how much they will get - I guess just to verify that they can get something - but they're just not interested," she revealed Monday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.
While there are many who simply want to give the information for "civic duty", Mrs Bruce Douglas argued that offering the monetary reward is still necessary since the agency also gets "valuable, pertinent information from those persons who are interested" in a reward.
She outlined that calls to Crime Stop range from tips about stolen motor vehicles, to wanted individuals and information on illegal firearms.
However, the monetary reward various for different types of information. For instance, more money is offered for tips on illegal firearms and wanted men.
"Yet, at the same time, we have persons who give us information on location of drugs or even a recovery of a stolen motor vehicle and they're interested in those rewards, and those rewards are minimal in comparison," the Crime Stop manager explained.
Mrs Bruce Douglas sought to assure that measures are in place to protect the identities and safety of people who collect rewards for providing tips to the entity.
"We do pay through a disbursement agency in a two-step authentication process that maintains our source's identity, and we have never had a source compromised in over 32 years of existence. So, I think that speaks volumes."
