NEPA points to storm water run-off as possible reason for Rio Cobre contamination

The National Environment & Planning Agency believes heavy rains over the weekend may have resulted in storm water run-off, of a likely contaminant into the Rio Cobre.

NEPA says marine life has been adversely affected due to an elevation in the level of acidity - commonly known as the pH level - in a section of the river near Zephyrton in Linstead, St. Catherine.

The Agency says the incident occurred on Monday.

According to NEPA, the elevation in the pH is consistent with the occurrence of a particular contaminant that could have negatively affected the river and likely caused the death of the fish.

Its team has collected water samples for further laboratory analysis to determine the source and confirm the type of contaminant.

The Agency says it will provide further updates on its findings and will advise on measures being pursued to safeguard the Rio Cobre.
