NPTAJ takes issue with PM over school-related fees

NPTAJ President Stewart Jacobs and Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness

Stewart Jacobs, President of the National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica,  is concerned that Prime Minister Andrew Holness has absolved parents from future payments of school-related fees with his comments at Sunday's Annual Conference of the Jamaica Labour Party.

Mr Jacobs argues that Prime Minister Holness made an absolute statement, instead of encouraging parents to continue contributing to their children's education.

Dr Holness, speaking at the Annual Conference of governing Jamaica Labour Party on Sunday, expressed concern about absenteeism in schools, and reminded school administrators that non-payment of fees should never prevent a child from accessing education.

But, in an interview with Radio Jamaica News, the NPTAJ President said the Prime Minister's statement is problematic, especially without additional funding from the Government.

Truancy

Onthe other hand, the NPTAJ President has come out in support for the plan to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Education & Youth to combat student absenteeism.

The Prime Minister announced plans to tackle that problem in his address at the JLP Conference as well.

Mr Jacobs said this was an "excellent idea."
