After years of operating without the necessary environmental permits for the Riverton City Landfill, the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has been granted two permits.
The permits were granted by the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA) at its monthly meeting on Tuesday.
A release from the National Environment Planning Agency (NEPA) says the granting of the permits should see improved management of the Riverton Disposal Facility.
The NRCA in granting the permits considered the lack of resources at the NSWMA and recommended that it seeks the required funding to comply with the conditions of the permits as well as improve its revenue earning potential.
The permits require the NSWMA to adhere to conditions on a phased basis with the first phase being for one year.
Meanwhile, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), says steps are being taken to assess the air quality, following Sunday's fire at the Riverton Landfill.
It says, the risk of the fire spreading has been minimised as a large portion of the area is now covered with top soil and this has also helped to suppress the smoke.
The Jamaica Fire Brigade will maintain a 24 hour presence at the facility.According to the ODPEM the area remains off limit for non-emergency response activities.
