NWC's Spanish Town Treatment Plant back in operation

The National Water Commission (NWC) says its Spanish Town Treatment Plant in St. Catherine which was shut down two weeks ago due to the massive chemical spill in the Rio Cobre, is now back in operation.

NWC President Mark Barnett told Radio Jamaica News that the NWC was given the greenlight by the authorities earlier this week to resume operation following tests on the water quality of the Rio Cobre.

He said residents served by the treatment plant should now be seeing more water flowing through their taps.

This is also good news for farmers who have been struggling to find water for their crops.

The National Water Commission was forced to shutdown the treatment plant due to the massive spill, leaving many communities without water.

At the time, the NWC said it would only resume operation after receiving word from the Ministry of Health.

The utility company was diverting water from other sources to ease the crisis.
