Petrojam has started the process to dispose of contaminated ethanol worth $45 million.
The 4,300 barrels of contaminated fuel were isolated in three storage tanks at Petrojam at the height of the bad gas saga between 2015 and 2016.
Energy Minister Fayval Williams yesterday told the House of Representatives that a decision was made to incinerate the ethanol.
She said Caribbean Cement has agreed to dispose of it at no cost to the government.
“The transportation of the contaminated ethanol to the Cement company commenced on July 25, using certified tanker petroleum wagons and will continue over an eight week period at a frequency of three trips per week,” she said.
Disposal of the contaminated fuel was one of the recommendations from a committee which examined issues surrounding the bad gas saga.
The Energy Minister also said that the transportation and disposal of the contaminated ethanol is being done under tight security.
“By letter dated July 5, the mInistry sought the assistance of the Office of the Commissioner of police to provide security escorts during the transportation process . Additionally, the opening of the tank and the loading of the truck was monitored by several agencies,” Williams said.
