The police have released the identities of those killed in a three vehicle collision on the Bull Point main road in Ocho Rios St Ann this morning.
The crash, which occurred about 2:30 in the vicinity of the Ocho Rios fishing village, involved two Mercedes Benz motor cars and a Toyota Vitz motor car.
One of those who died was 17 year-old Shantana Leonard, a student of Browns Town High School. The other three were all from Mansfield Heights in Ocho Rios: 16 year old Kenneil Lyle, who attended Iona High School in St Mary; 15 year old Rajani Abdul, a student of Oracabessa High, St Mary, and 16 year-old Marcodine Maxwell, who also attended Oracabessa High.
The police said they were all travelling in the Toyota Vitz.
The St Ann police are now searching for the drivers and passengers from the two high end vehicles, who reportedly fled the scene after hastily removing demonstration plates that were affixed to them, among other items.
It's reported that the two black C43 Mercedes Benz motorcars, with no registration plates affixed, were traveling in a westerly direction along the Bull Point main road at very high speeds, when one of the drivers attempted to overtake the other, venturing into the path of the Toyota Vitz motorcar that was traveling in the opposite direction.
The overtaking Mercedes Benz collided into the left front section of the Toyota Vitz, forcing it into the right lane where the other Mercedes Benz collided into its left side, causing significant damage to all three vehicles.
Four critically wounded people from the Vitz were transported to St. Ann's Bay Hospital where they were pronounced.
The driver of the Vitz, had to be removed from the vehicle by fire fighters from the Ocho Rios station.
The police also suspect that persons from the high-end vehicles were seriously injured in the crash.
Today's crash comes one week after a triple fatal incident on the Salem main road in Runaway Bay.
Another crash; another death
Not long after the St. Ann crash, a motorist in St. James died in another road fatality after a two-vehicle collision on the Lilliput main road.
The deceased has only been identified as a 53 year-old man, who was the driver of one of the vehicles.
The crash occurred about 4:15, involving a white Toyota Corolla motorcar and a white Honda Stream car.
Dr Lucien Jones, Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, says the five fatalities in the two northern parishes have increased the number of road traffic deaths since the start of the year to 290, and among their numbers, 35 died during the month of October.
He said that, with one day to go, October has already been the third bloodiest month for the year, "exceeded only by 39 fatalities in August and 40 in July, which means that over the last three months, 114 precious lives have been lost on the nation's roads."
He said he was therefore calling for a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness, in his capacity as Chairman of th National Road Safey Council Prime Minister, toto urgently discuss the options available for halting this terrible carnage now being visited on our nation's roads."
