PNM wins Trinidad & Tobago election

The People's National Movement (PNM) in Trinidad & Tobago, led by Dr. Keith Rowley, has won the general election, securing 23 seats to 18 for the United National Congress (UNC), which was the dominant partner in the last People's Partnership coalition government, led by Kamla Persad Bissessar.

Dr. Rowley addressed the media and claimed victory for the PNM, historically the strongest political movement in the twin-island republic.

In a subsequent address at his Party headquarters, he likened Monday night's victory celebration to a wedding. While acknowledging that this was important, he cautioned his supporters that what was more important was "the living" that would follow the wedding.

Outgoing prime minister, Kamla Persad-Bissassor, leader of the UNC, later conceded defeat.

Expressing satisfaction that her government had done its best, Mrs. Persad-Bissassor said she had "no regrets."
