The People's National Party (PNP) has paid tribute to former senator Delano Franklyn who died Thursday at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
He was 63.
Mr. Franklyn had been ailing for some time.
The party remembered him as a statesman and patriot who served the PNP and country well.
Mr. Franklyn, an attorney and author, served as a Special Advisor to former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and Chief Advisor to former Prime Minister P. J. Patterson.
He was appointed to the Senate in 2002 and served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
As Minister of State, Mr. Franklyn established several programmes, including the Jamaica Diaspora Conference and the Jamaica Diaspora Foundation.
"His work as Minister of State, strengthened Jamaica's diplomatic relations with regional and international partners. Comrade Franklyn was dedicated to the PNP and our movement until the very end," the PNP said.
Party President Mark Golding, in expressing condolences, said the country lost a statesman whose "contribution to our Party, country and as an author will be forever remembered."
He expressed "sincere condolences to [Franklyn's] wife Tricia, friends and legal fraternity”.
PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell said "Franklyn's transition has brought a wave of sorrow over the Party. His untimely passing is a reminder to stay true to our mission, as he was a fervent believer in social justice and equality for all."
Former PNP President Dr. Peter Phillips also paid tribute to the former senator, saying he was “deeply saddened" by his death. Dr. Phillips added that Mr. Franklyn's "passion, zeal and essential decency will be sadly missed."
