Police constable on murder charge offered bail

By Clinton McGregor

A police officer, charged with murder, was offered bail on Tuesday when he appeared before the St. James Parish Court.

Constable Waeyvel Phillips was offered bail in the sum of $400,000 following a bail hearing.

Constable Phillips was charged by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) in relation to the May 13, 2022 off-duty fatal shooting of 33-year old Kadmar Beadle, at a bar at Jarrett Street in Montego Bay, St. James.

It was reported that Mr. Beadle and Constable Phillips had an argument at the bar.

During a tussle, Mr. Beadle was shot and the policeman stabbed with a sharp implement.

Both men were taken to hospital where Mr. Beadle was pronounced dead.

Constable Phillips, who left the island, was taken into custody on his return to Jamaica, seven months after the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled that he be charged with the offences of murder and making use of a firearm to commit a felony.

Constable Phillips is to return to court on December 4.
