Police Federation concerned about members' safety as COVID-19 cases surge

Sergeant Patrae Rowe, Chairman of the Police Federation

Sergeant Patrae Rowe, Chairman of the Police Federation, has issued an urgent appeal to police personnel to protect themselves against the coronavirus while carrying out duties on election day.

The chairman said the surge in coronavirus cases has been affecting operations at some police stations, with more than 70 cops now in quarantine.

The Highgate police station in St. Mary on Monday closed to members of the public after a civilian worker tested positive for COVID-19.

Police officers who came in contact with the worker have been placed in quarantine and are awaiting results of COVID-19 tests.

Sergeant Rowe is worried about the police being exposed to the virus.

He has encouraged members to "stay clear of situations where they believe that their health can be compromised." He explained that while officers are to "stay clear", this does not mean they should be inactive or passive in carrying out their duties but should ensure they maintain a safe physical distance from persons as well as wear their masks and sanitise regularly.

He also urged members to "allow the Ministry of Health to lead in response to interacting with (persons who have COVID-19)."

Sergeant Rowe, who was speaking in an interview with Radio Jamaica News on Tuesday, was reacting to the decision to allow persons in isolation to vote in Thursday's election.
