A policeman who is accused of soliciting money to preserve a ganja field in St. Elizabeth, has been suspended and is facing charges.
According to a statement from the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Constable Cregston Martell was a part of a July 8 operation that resulted in the arrest of six men for breaching the Dangerous Drugs Act.
It is alleged that following the operation, Constable Martell solicited money from the men to prevent the destruction of the ganja field.
Mr. Martel was arrested on July 9, following an operation by the Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau.
A file was subsequently submitted to the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions for a ruling.
Following a ruling on July 16, Mr. Martell was charged with two counts of breaching the Corruption Prevention Act.
He was recently offered bail in the sum of $1 million when he appeared in the St. Elizabeth Parish Court.
The policeman is to return to court on November 11.
