Positions of more than 1,100 civilian workers in JCF made permanent

The positions of more than 1,100 civilian workers in the Jamaica Constabulary Force have been made permanent.

This after the civilian establishment of the JCF was increased.

National Security Minister, Dr Horace Chang told the House of Representatives on Tuesday that the workers had been operating on fixed term contracts for several decades. This, he explained, limited their access to pension and health benefits.

Dr Chang stressed that the change was necessary and will benefit the most vulnerable group of workers in the JCF.

An audit conducted by the Office of the Services Commission for the period August 1, 2018 to April 30, 2021 revealed that the JCF had a civilian staff complement of 1,900 people. Of that number, close to 50 per cent were employed on a contractual basis as either casual daily paid or part-time workers.
