Basil Wilson, Professor Emeritus of John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York
Jamaican Basil Wilson, Professor Emeritus of John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, has suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin will fail in his attack on Ukraine.
He believes Putin is frightened by the political ramifications of the expansion of democratic regimes in eastern Europe, some of which have become members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
According Professor Wilson, Russia is becoming increasingly isolated.
"The only success that it has had in recent years is through militarisation. I mean, they've had some success in propping up [Bashar Al-] Assad’s regime in Syria, the occupation of Crimea and certain parts of Georgia. So they're really willing to use naked power in order to obtain some objectives, which I think will lead to the detriment of Putin's regime in the long run," he argued.
Professor Wilson said the sanctions that will be imposed by the European Union and western countries will have serious implications on the Russian economy.
"I mean they do have some reserves; [they] have amassed about $650 billion. They've been putting some money in Poland and trying to move away from dependency on the West, but... [more serious sanctions] must have some crippling effect on the Russian economy."
However, Professor Wilson said it is yet to be seen to what extent China is willing to support Russia in its bid for expansionism in Europe.
The professor was speaking Thursday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.
