Rains very likely this weekend, says Met Service

Evan Thompson, Director of the Meteorological Service of Jamaica

The Meteorological Service says it is now a strong possibility that the island will be impacted by rain on the weekend.

The agency's director, Evan Thompson, says the forecast remains for the Tropical Wave in the east central Caribbean to develop into a Tropical Depression.

Mr. Thompson says mostly southern and eastern parishes will be affected.

"It is likely to move to the south of Jamaica during the day tomorrow going into Saturday and then we could see further development of that system before it exists the Caribbean," he said Thursday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.

It would primary be southern and eastern parishes but it also will most likely impact other parishes.

He said the persistent rainfall means the country will not likely have the early onset of drought next year.

Doppler Weather Radar soon

In the meantime, Mr. Thompson has said installation of a Doppler Weather Radar at Cooper's Hill, St. Andrew, is to be completed by the end of the 2020/2021 financial year.

He said the US$2.5 million system will enhance the island's early warning process.

The radar is used to estimate rain and other conditions, and will significantly improve Jamaica's ability to accurately forecast extreme weather events.

The new Doppler radar will replace the aged system which is currently used by the Meteorological Service.
