Reclassification of security guards as employees yet to be completed

JSIS President Lieutenant Commander George Overton

The Jamaica Society for Industrial Security (JSIS) says the reclassification of security guards to the status of employees has been delayed as discussions continue with clients in the public and private sectors.

JSIS says it has taken note of the numerous conversations and articles on the matter.

President of JSIS Lieutenant Commander George Overton says the negotiations with clients, including the government, are progressing in relation to the new rates that will be charged and the dates those rates will be applicable.

He said the talks have not been progressing as quickly as the group would have liked, but he is hopeful there will be an agreement "within the next week or two", after which the transition can be made.

Commander Overton said every effort is being made to ensure that the transition does not result in unnecessary hardship for security officers and further negative effects on clients.
