Rick's Café managers plead not guilty to charges in relation to Mocha Fest

The two Rick's Café managers charged in relation to the Mocha Fest party held at the establishment in Negril, Westmoreland, have pleaded not guilty.

They are to return to the Westmoreland Parish Court on August 9.

When the matter was called up on Tuesday, Financial Controller at Rick's Café, Conroy Barrett, pleaded not guilty to breaching the Spirit Licence Act and operating without an amusement licence.

His colleague, Thomas Martin, pleaded not guilty to breaches of the Disaster Risk Management Act, the Spirit Licence Act and operating without an amusement licence.

Defence attorney Peter Champagnie urged the prosecution to review the case against Mr. Barrett.

He said Mr. Barrett should not have been charged as he had no responsibility for the daily operations of Rick's Café.

Prosecutors will respond at the next court date.

Mr. Martin and Mr. Barrett were charged after a video surfaced last month showing hundreds of revellers attending a Mocha Fest party at Rick's Café.

This was in breach of COVID-19 prevention protocols.
