There is a desperate search in Pleasant Hill, Sligoville in St. Catherine for a taxi operator who has been missing since Friday night.

Foul play is suspected in the disappearance of Roshane Wilkins, after the burnt remains of the car he was driving were found in a section of the community on Saturday night.

The car is owned by another taxi operator.

A shoe and money were found near to the scene.

Dozens of taxi operators from the Bog Walk and Linstead Taxi Association, armed with machetes, have been searching the bushes in Pleasant Hill to find their colleague who operates on the Ewarton to Linstead route.

President of the taxi association, Michelle Taffe, says information received is that Mr. Wilkins was chartered to transport passengers to the airport on Friday.

"And we have never heard or see him again. We are now probing the areas, we have about over 30 operators here with me and we are hoping that we will come out successfully. If we don't find him today, we plan to come back Wednesday in full force," she said.

Retired taxi operator, Omar Bailey, who has joined in the search for Mr. Wilkins, is encouraging taxi operators to install tracking devices and cameras on their vehicles.

He believes that safeguarding taxi operators and passengers outweigh concerns about infringement of privacy.

"I'm saying to operators and people who are coming in the sector, in the business, install tracking device. Most drivers does not like it because they feel like boss is watching them, but it's for our safety," he insisted.

"I would even say give more operators licensed firearms so we can be able to combat hoodlums like these because it's a very risky job. We have lost a lot of operators in Linstead division [to] criminal elements," added Mr. Bailey.

The incident comes on the heels of last week's gun attack in the town of Linstead, which left a taxi operator dead and several passengers wounded.
