Security guards fired for beating UTECH student

The administration of the University of Technology, UTECH, is investigating an incident in which a male student, alleged to be a homosexual was beaten by security guards. The incident took place Thursday night.

The guards employed to Marksman Limited have since been dismissed.

The UTECH administration on Friday held a meeting with representatives of Marksman Limited and the Students' Union.

In a statement this afternoon, the administration said it is providing counselling to those involved in the incident.

It also says the Students’ Union executive has initiated a series of discussions and sensitization sessions to encourage appropriate behaviour and to support the safety and security of the wider student body.

And Marksman Limited said after thorough investigations the guards involved in the incident were fired.

UTECH explained that the two students involved in the incident were chased and one of them managed to escape while the other ended up in the Guard Room at the entrance of the campus.

It was this student who was physically assaulted by on-duty security guards employed by the contracted security company while several other students encircled the Guard Room in order to get a hold of him.

The administration disclosed that the student was protected from the mob by Security Officers and removed from the campus with support from police officers.

The University’s administration, the University’s Students’ Union and Marksman Limited have strongly condemned the assault on the student by the security guards, and other individuals.

A video tape of the incident was widely circulated on social media.

However, the administrators of YouTube have since removed the video saying the content violated its terms of service.
