Several Weise Road residents agree to relocate from flood-prone area

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie on Thursday disclosed that at least five families have agreed to relocate from the flood-prone community of Weise Road in Bull Bay, St. Andrew.

Several residents of the community were forced to flee their houses last October after a river overflowed its banks resulting in extensive flooding and damage to infrastructure.

Following the flood, Mr. McKenzie told Radio Jamaica News that consideration was given to relocating the residents.

In an update on Thursday, he said areas have been identified for the residents' relocation and the government will be "exploring those areas to see how practical [they are] and what we can do to assist them."

Mr. McKenzie said the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has been assessing the situation in the community and the "SDC has been on the ground doing a survey to help to direct us as to how to proceed."
