Six shot, three fatally, in Trelawny

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang

Six people were shot, three fatally, by gunmen in Bounty Hall, Trelawny on Friday morning.

The deceased have been identified as 24-year-old Daniel Williams, 26-year-old Tachae Black and 25-year-old Shanielia Clarke, all of Trelawny addresses.

Three other three victims - all women - have been hospitalised in serious condition.

Investigators reported that shortly after 1 o'clock, Mr. Williams and the five women were returning from a party in Wakefield when they stopped at a yard in Bounty Hall to pick up a friend.

They were attacked by four men carrying rifles and handguns.

The gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, hitting the six individuals.

Superintendent Carlos Russell, Commanding Officer for the Trelawny Division, said the deadly shooting was a case of mistaken identity.

'Crime emotionally draining'

Reacting to the triple killing on Friday, National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang said the violence in Jamaica is worrying and emotionally draining.

However, Dr. Chang said he has come to understand the depth of the challenge.

Speaking on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, Dr. Chang reiterated the commitment to finding resources to address the problem.

"We have to spend a lot more money. It's gonna cost the country more. It's gonna take time because the social decay in a number of our communities is severe and it's gonna take time to overcome. The propensity for violence which has come in the second half of our independence is almost pathological and we have to look at combined efforts and major investment. But it's not just a knee-jerk reaction. It takes planning...and once it gets going, it will move much faster," he asserted.
