At least one business operator in Portmore, St. Catherine has given support to an initiative of the St. Catherine South Police to assign a dedicated patrol team to commercial areas in response to an upsurge in shootings.

The initiative, dubbed Business Watch, was launched on Wednesday at the Portmore Town Centre by the Community Safety and Security unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

One business operator told Radio Jamaica News that the presence of the police is a confidence booster not only for them but also customers, as they "feel so much more secure" and are glad the initiative will be ongoing.

The latest shooting at the town centre occurred on August 9 when a man was injured at a gaming lounge.

Senior Superintendent Christopher Phillips, head of the St. Catherine South Police, said sensitisation sessions will be held with business operators about some of the security measures that will be in place.

"We want to really revive that kind of a beat patrol that is more focused around the business safety and security issues. Even with our quick response team, they too will form a part of what we want to do in terms of a greater interaction with the business community and so we're out here just promoting that," he said, adding that the reception to the plan "has been very, very good".
