Motorists and pedestrians who travel through the Santa Cruz town centre in St. Elizabeth are raising alarm about a pool of water that has settled on the main road for about two weeks.

They say the stagnant water has become a nuisance, with pedestrians having to avoid being splashed and the main road reduced to single lane traffic.

The situation has worsened following a recently damaged water pipe.

While heading to school Tuesday morning, some students were observed attempting to skip over the water.

Others walked through it or took a detour through a nearby plaza.

One student explained the difficulty encountered while traversing the roadway daily.

"Every time I walk past, sir, they would be like splashing water, so I have to move away from there.... I had to stand here and wait on them to finish because I didn't want to walk and any water splash me, sir, because I'm going to school," said the boy, who urged the authorities to "fix the drainage because that is causing the problem".

Mayor of Black River Richard Salmon said the St. Elizabeth Municipal Corporation has received funding to carry out some corrective work, but it will first be conducting a site visit to assess the issue.
